The middle of the earth is a really, really hot core of solid metal.

Alex is right – the centre of the Earth, what we call the ‘inner core’ is a sphere of solid metal, mostly iron. Its solid, but really, really hot (something like 6000 degrees C). That is surrounded by a layer of liquid metal (the ‘outer core’), before we then get to the parts of the Earth that are made up of rock.
