At the bottom of the ocean at what we can ‘oceanic plates’. These a a specific type of tectonic plate, the top part of which is made up of types of rock called basalts and gabbros. They’re often covered by a layer of sediment, deposited from the sea (along with all sorts of other things – dead whales, sunken ships, etc).

In addition to what Tim said, we also find organisms that are adapted to living in deep water – there is little/no light, and the pressure of all that water means that far fewer animals are able to survive. That means we find some really unique and interesting animals down there too!
