Cancer spreads as a result of excessive cell growth. Cells have a process called Apoptosis which means cell death. As old cells die, new cells are formed. When cells refuse to die and there is a continuous and excessive production of cells such that their producing organ becomes small for them then they start to spread to other parts of the body. e.g when you find liver cells growing in the kidney or vice versa, cancer has spread and is termed malignant.
