One of the things I work on is looking at the depths at which earthquakes occur. I try and determine really accurately exactly where within the outermost layers of the Earth (the brittle bit that we call the ‘lithosphere’) earthquakes have occurred. Some of my work has been based around finding surprisingly deep earthquakes in various places, including beneath the Tibetan plateau, and in working out how it is that earthquakes can happen in such places, and what they tell us about the structure of the Earth down there.
