  DNA is different in different plants and animals. If two plants are closely related, then transferring bits of DNA is easier, might even be possible through normal pollination. When two types of plant are really different, then the science is harder; you first have to find the bit that does the job you want, then find a way of putting it in the new plant in a way that lets it survive, breed and produce the effect you want
