      I try and aim for 7-8 hours a night. Sometimes that is not do-able, though. But I think everyone seems to be slightly different in how they sleep, and how much sleep they need to be functional!

      I hear it is supposed to be seven to eight – but I actually need eight, must be my body-clock.
      I used to work 12 hours a day, which meant I had enough time to get home before I fell asleep

      It really depends on your age, and also on your individual needs. The recommended amount of sleep falls off from between 14-17 hours for newborns (0-3 months old) down to 7-8 hours for 65+ adults. The average seems to be between 7 and 10 hours from the age of 14, according to a new scientist article published a few years ago:
