      Liquid ice is water, and it can evaporate, even when it is ice.
      This is how you get freeze dried food, like instant coffee, and why opened packet of frozen food get that dried up look – check out an old tub of ice cream, rubbery round the edges.
      An experiment for school – get a big block of ice, hang a piece of wire over the top on a heavy weight, and the wire will slowly slip through the ice. Get the science teacher to explain what is happening
