Electricity itself is something we call a secondary energy source – this means that it is created by another form of energy, a primary energy source. We have large machines, called turbines, which spin very quickly – these are powered by a primary energy source, like coal, gas, or oil. When these turbines spin, they cause large magnets to turn within wire coils, called generators. These generators are what create electricity. There are many different types, powered by gas, steam, and nuclear energy.
