I am looking for
1. enthusiasm
2. knowledge – find out about hte employer before you go to interview
3. good commuication – if your application has bad spelling I am unlikely to invite you to interview as attention to detail is important as a scientist
4. smart attire
5. commitment – are you going to complete the course, and ensure that the time and money put inot training you will benefit the organisation in the future? ( I don’t expect you to stay for years and years though!)
You will succeed if you can practice the answers to common interview questions such as
1. where do you see yourelf in 5 years time?
2. why do you want ot work for us?
3. what are your strengths and weaknesses?
Just to add to Melanie’s brilliant answer, I think it can also be good to be able to ask questions of your interviewers – so for example, you could ask:
– what the long-term aims are of the company you want to work for
– how they see their business growing
– whether there will be chances for you to learn new skills and improve yourself while you work for them
It’s as much about you working out if you want to work for them as it is about them seeing if they want to hire you!
