Actually during the earthquake, and the immediate aftermath, there isn’t often much for my type of science to contribute – and its important not to get in the way of the important people doing emergency response. We’re more about trying to understand the processes behind earthquakes, so that we understand where and how they happen better, and can plan better for the future. So really, for what we do to matter, we have to make a difference *before* an earthquake.
