That’s a hard question. We do know that the Universe was born in a hot “explosion” that we call the Big Bang, 13.7 billion years ago. At the time, the Universe was all condensed into a super-dense, super-hot point, and all the energy, and light and matter where produced at that one instant.
But we don’t know what made the Big Bang happen, nor what was there before it (not even whether this question makes sense!). So we keep thinking about this question and perhaps one day we’ll learn something more.
