So I am Spanish and when I speak English I have a very thick Spanish accent. However, when I went to an international school, I started picking up certain expressions and accents from people there, and many of my friends got an american accent.
Now that I have been in England for few years, still have a strong Spanish accent, but I am using many more British words, expressions and intonations!
As we grow up and learn to talk we do this by copying what we hear. So we take on the accent of the people around us. But although you may always keep the accent from where you grew up, it can adapt if you then move to live somewhere else. But often people find that when they go back to visit where they grew up, or if they are talking to an old friend from that same place, they instinctively switch back to that native accent while they are there. I think it’s fascinating how we adapt our accents without even thinking about it.
