I think the dinosaurs became extinct because the environment around them changed too quickly for them to adapt. And so the temperature changed, and their food sources ran out and maybe even the water and nutrients around them changed. The dinosaurs were unable to evolve quickly enough to adapt to these changes and so they died out.
Many scientists believe this was caused by a massive asteroid crashing into the earth and changing the environment. So, if you think about how a volcanic eruption scatters ash and debris everywhere on the ground and puts lots of poisonous gases into the air and things like that. It is really dangerous and makes it hard to survive in the area around the volcano. Well the asteroid crashing into the Earth would have had a similar effect (wiping out the plants, spreading dust and debris, creating a big crater etc) but on a really large scale.
But, some dinosaurs did survive and have evolved. Some birds for example can be linked back to the dinosaurs; crocodiles and even some sharks are said to have evolved directly from dinosaurs.
