Question: its not a question but thanks for the chat however you didnt get time to answer my last question what is the most interesting thing thing you have ever found /friend/ hey becky ;)
Hi, sorry I couldn’t answer in the session, I’m glad you (re) asked. 🙂
I do so many different and varied things in my job, that is it hard to say what the most interesting is. At the moment I have 3 projects on the go. I’ve been mixing different types of glass to see what would happen and if I can find a pattern to represent recycling. I want to then try and see if I can see the same pattern in Roman glass, so we can identify whether it has been recycled or not. I’ve also been analysing prehistoric obsidian blades to see if I can work out which source outcrop the original obsidian came from. I’m also helping students look at the compositions of different objects like metal, ceramic and stone.
But, the most interesting thing I have found would have to be on a WWI excavation where we found the body of an australian soldier who was killed in action in 1918. He had all of kit on him (which was preserved) and he was also carrying souvenirs. Our team worked really hard and were eventually able to identify him and he had a full military burial. For us, it was also really interesting to see what sort of things people had in their military kit but also the personal items that they carried. It was a very moving experience.
