I got schizophrenia, and have been in hospital a lot of times for that. Schizophrenia is a mental illness which made me really confused and miserable. But thanks to a lot of help and support, I am doing much better now, and haven’t been in hospital for a few years – I just take medicines and look after myself, and my lovely boyfriend helps to look after me too. Life is good now!
On my seventh birthday, I grew a massive lump on my neck. My mum took me to the doctors, he sent me to hospital thinking I may have mumps (dangerous disease). I was in hospital most of that day being tested on, then they let me go home in the evening because it was my birthday. I went back the next day, they had no idea what the lump was so they did more tests. Eventually, a couple of days later it went away on its own. The doctors still have absolutely no idea what it was.
The best theory that they had was that I had caught mumps but because I’d had the MMR jab (very important to prevent three very dangerous diseases), I had not developed full blown mumps. Instead the infection had localised in my neck and my immune system had effectively got rid of it on its own.
I actually never been too ill all my life and only had to take antibiotics twice! One for an ear infection and another for a really nasty cut. When I was a baby though I had severe jaundice (blood disease that turns you yellow like a simpson) and had to have a blood transfusion so I would survive, I was too young to remember but my parents were worried.
