Difficult question! Consciousness is about being aware and able to think. There are lots of theories about it, but nobody has been able to prove anything.

Consciousness is quite hard to define, let alone explain!

It is generally defied in somewhat vague terms. Mostly definitions refer to the awareness of both the self and other stuff. Some philosophers have believed that their is a kind of intuition whereby humans know what consciousness is without being able to explain it.

There is considerable research ongoing trying to pin down where consciousness comes from. It has invlved drugs inducung altered consciousness and some other strange and interesting phemomena that demonstrate strange facets of consciousness.
