I once did an experiment that was growing fungus on rotting meat. For sure that was the smelliest thing I’ve ever done. It smelled like a turkey dinner that had been forgotten about in the fridge too long, then microwaved for about 10 minutes, mixed with poop. It was not nice.

In the lab I always seem to have to use things that smell. I’ve used a chemical called butyric acid which absolutely stinks! You find it in vomit and that’s exactly what it smells like. It’s enough to make anyone sick!

In one experiment I was working with Skatoles which (at low concentrations) smells a bit like Jasmine and (at high concentrations) smells like poo.

A while ago we made a mutant-virus that we named “The super farting virus”. This is because we created a mutation in the virus DNA that changed its structure to have a chemical group named “thiol”. In chemistry, thiols are known for its sulfur-smell, which are more often recognised in the strong odour of natural gas, resembling the smell of rotten eggs and…farts.
