This is always a very polarising topic. Personally, I think that animal testing should be conducted but only if there is no alternative option.

I think animal testing should be done as little as possible, treating the animals humanely and with respect, and only done if absolutely necessary. But sadly I do think it is necessary. There is some money going into research to find alternatives to animal testing.

Nobody wants to be testing on animals. As it stands at the moment, testing of new drugs has to be carried out on animals before they can be given to humans. Until technology gets better, we have to accept that if we want to develop new medicines. Although I think that animal testing should be kept to an absolute minimum. Products like make-up etc don’t need to be tested on animals so shouldn’t be. Hopefully there will be an alternative to this sooner rather than later.

Many fields of research require testing in animals: humans and non-humans. In all cases, this should be done when necessary, with respect and care. However (this might sound cruel) I know testing in animals is an important step in several fields of research, before and during clinical trials – for example, a drug is normally tested on “artificial” systems first (isolated cells, for example), then on non-humans (the “closest” model we have), and later on humans.
