I’ve loved science since I was a child, but it wasn’t until my third year of university (that’s at age 21 in Canada) that I thought about becoming a scientist. I was one of the first people in my family to go to university, and didn’t really know a lot about how it all worked. I didn’t even really realize that someone could become a scientist if they wanted to! I feel very lucky that I had good lecturers who told me about how someone can become a researcher.

When I started at high school, my favourite subject was science. After that I realised pretty quickly that I wanted to be a scientist. I like doing experiments to find out what happens. It took me a while to decide to specialise in chemistry because I like physics too. Physics had a lot of maths in it though so chemistry won 🙂

I was 10 years old when I realised I wanted to become a scientist. I liked to go to the countryside and observe the little bugs and plants and I used to watch a cartoon series about famous inventors. This inspired me a lot, so when I finished school I decided to study Biology in the university and then to do a PhD to start researching.

I guess it’s always been something just going on in the background. There are loads of things I would like to do, to be honest I don’t know when I decided to become a scientist. It just sort of happened.

I am not sure, because I kept changing my mind about what I wanted to do. When I was a kid, I was always very curious about my surroundings, but I guess that doesn’t make me a scientist. However, that was important because it lead to reading a lot of books and talking to people about it. I became more and more interested in what it is that a scientist do. I think it was only when I started university (I was 19) I decided that I was going to be a “grown-up scientist”.
