Because every time I answer a question with research it throws up a new one! That means there is always something new you’re dying to find out about and you can’t get bored. I love researching about companion animals like cats, dogs and horses because they give us so much but we don’t understand them quite as well as we think we do…
A great question. It’s a bit like asking why some people fancy one person but not another. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have studied different parts of animal behaviour – and different subjects when I was at school. I just got really fascinated by the patterns that bird song makes when you look at it visually. It’s so precise and neat. You can see an example of one of these sound pictures (a sonagram) from my profile here:
Because of the wonders of wildlife and the mysterious nature of the forest. Lots of fascinating things happen in the forest that is left undiscovered and many of the plants and animals living there are important to the well-being of humans, for example, the forest helps capture water for us and villagers to drink. Of course, I find wild animals extremely adorable (even bugs!) and swimming in the freshwater untouched rivers is an amazing experience!
Because animals are just that interesting! Studying animal behaviour isn’t like studying just the one thing, it’s more like opening Mary Poppin’s bag and discovering that is has unlimited questions that require studying different species to get to the answers. For example, I studied male pregnancy in pipefishes, then moved on to studying social interactions and vocalisations in meerkats, now I’m studying group behaviour using the Princess of Burundi (a small cichlid fish from Lake Tanganyika in Africa). And every time you think you got your answer, that you finally understand what is going on, a new question pops up and that is what keeps you going forward.
I am interested in what I do I think because every day is different. Every day I sit down to watch the videos of my elephants and I wonder what i am going to find next. Will two elephants who haven’t been getting on start being nicer to eachother? Will i be able to tell the keepers that the young elephants have been playing over night? I am also of course interested because I get to study really amazing animals! And then on the other side I get to talk about what I do to other people, which is a really rewarding experience!
