My Mum used to point out interesting birds when we were out on walks when I was small. But I started studying birds properly when I was at university. We had an amazing teacher who talked about how animals learned behaviour. I was doing a sandwich course which meant I spent some time working during my degree. I asked who did animal behaviour research. He said “scientists” and he put me in touch with someone he knew. This person just happened to investigate birds and their songs. I joined him for 6 months and loved it
