I feel like I have done quite a few exciting things and each time I am asked this I think I answer differently, ha. I have done a sky dive in S Africa which was pretty awesome, walked a lion (terrifying!) and swum the length of Lake Windermere (all 10.6 miles of it!)
But today I realised I had forgotten a really exciting thing which essentially changed my life. In July 2014 I set up a running club – it started out at just a few people and now we have over 200 members. And then last year I helped, along with a few others, to set up a local parkrun which has hundreds of attendees each week. Both of these things enable people to get up, get out and run with friends, all for free. And looking back the first day for both of these things was so scary and exciting all rolled into one!
I flew to Vancouver, Canada, 10 hours away from London, for a holiday when I was in my last year at university. I had never been away on my own before and had always wanted to visit Canada. It was amazing! I got upgraded to 1st class on the plane which started things off well. I travelled all around, by coach, train and ferry, even visiting the town of Prince Rupert (well, I had to, right?). I didn’t have much money – I had spent it on the plane ticket! Lunch each day was a bread roll and a squeeze of honey from a plastic jar. But I had an amazing time, fell in love with the country and the people. So sad when I had to leave though.
Deciding to go to university in Bangor. When I got the letter saying I had been accepted, I literally fell on the floor of my grandma’s kitchen and cried for hours. I was 17 and I had never lived away from home let alone in a different country where people spoke a different language. I was terrified at the project of moving that I couldn’t decided whether I was happy or deeply unhappy with the news. It ended up being a very difficult decision followed by a steeeeep learning curve, but one of the best decisions in my life and one I could never regret. It changed me forever and gave me the experiences that later led me to decide to follow a career in academia.
Having a exhilarating experience on a tree top adventure by GoApe. We were going through obstacles in the tree canopy, which was very exciting indeed! I am terribly afraid of heights, so that was definitely exciting!
