Atoms are made up of three different kinds of particles: neutrons and protons in the core, the nucleus, and electrons moving around on the outside. Different atoms have different numbers of these particles. Thank you for this question. 🙂 It had been a long, long time since I last thought about these things so I hope I’m not wrong, but if I am, I’m sure the others can correct me.

Ines’ answer matches my vague memory of this from school!

I am glad Ines jumped in and answered this one… i would certainly have had to do a bit of researching to find out, it has been a very long time since i looked at them!

Atoms are made of protons, electrons and neutrons. Different atoms are made of different numbers of each of these 3 things. They are called sub-atomic particles.

      OOooo

An atom consists of electrons surrounding protons and neutrons. The number of electrons, protons and neutrons depend on which element we are looking at. For example Oxygen atoms have 8 of each and Nitrogen atoms have 7 of each.
