Great question. Monocular vision, where the eyes operate independently, is often found in animals with eyes on either side of their head (horses, rabbits), whereas binocular vision, where the yes work together, is found in animals with eyes towards to the front of their head, (including humans, birds of prey, cats and dogs). Monocular animals have a wider field of vision, so can see predators coming, but have less judgement of distance. As such they are mostly herbivores – they don’t need to judge distance as well as they are standing on their food! Binocular animal lose the ability to see behind them to check for predators in order to be able to judge distance better, which is important of you are a carnivore and your next meal is on the move!
