All my family is very supportive, but probably my dad is my biggest fan. Every time he introduces me to someone he says “This is my daughter….she is a scientist, you know?”. It is very embarrassing but also very cute.
My parents and grandparents have supported me financially a lot, which has been wonderful. But on a day-to-day basis, my boyfriend is probably the most supportive. My career is just as important as his and he would be happy to move somewhere exciting if I got an amazing job opportunity… I really like the idea of living in Africa for a few years, so hopefully he doesn’t change his mind!
Definitely my wife and kids. My wife is a scientists as well so she understands how frustrating it can be and is always ready with a positive work when things go well, or not so well. My kids are aged 8 and 5 and they think having scientists for parents is cool and, although they don’t always understand, always ask about what we’ve done and what we’re doing and why and it helps you forget when you’ve had a bad day and always gives you a bit of child-like enthusiasm to get back to the lab.
My Dad is very supportive, especially because he enjoys putting his kilt on for my graduations:) My supervisors are brilliant and I couldn’t do my research without the people who give up their time to come and volunteer for the study.
