Do you know something we don’t JoshuaJ?! 😉
I guess a mixture of shock and wanting to know why I was being fired.

I would probably be quite upset because I work hard and I genuinely care about the research.

A lot of science is run on fixed funding so sometimes the money runs out or the project finishes and you have to move on to something else but that’s different from being fired.

I would go to Tesco and buy loads and loads of chocolate. We are talking like 5kg worth of chocolate at least! Then I would go home, put Lord of The Rings or Harry Potter on and watch films until I had eaten all of the chocolate. Then I would wake up the next day and look for a new job because it’s not the end of the world and it could be worse….i could have died.

Also something important to know about science which Adele has mentioned is that a lot of science jobs (especially in Universities) are fixed term. This means you are employed for 1 year or 2 years at a time and then the money is all gone and you need to find a new job. It’s actually one of the only concerns I have about working in academia, is that job security just isn’t really a thing until you become a lecturer. So for thie first 10ish years a lot of people work on fixed term contracts until they get a permanent position. Some people never get permanent positions and they always work on fixed term contracts but luckily they get grants from places like cancer research uk that mean they can extend their job for another few years.

I like to think I’d see it as an opportunity to learn new things! The thing about science is that we’re constantly figuring more things out, so it’s really important to be flexible and be able to adapt to change
